Kev’s Betting Tips – Week 3Posted: March 14, 2012
Well last week was a fairly atrocious one! Both Shamrock Rovers being held and Limerick losing (To Waterford!) just goes to show how un-predictable this league really is. This week I’ll be playing it safer, with only the one team being backed, but I’ll still be giving you some tips of mine for a few other games taking place on our shores over Paddy’s weekend. Cheltenham out, League of Ireland in!
Cork City v Shamrock Rovers
While City fans will be relishing the occasion of the reigning champions’ visit to Turner Cross, they won’t be looking forward to what may transpire on the pitch. Following two very disappointing defeats, Rebel Army supporters and players alike will be low on confidence going into a game highlighted as their true test in this division. Rovers themselves haven’t been totally on form, but are thanking Gary Twigg once again for providing the crucial goals in the season opener against Drogheda. Given City’s creaky defence and Twigg’s hot start, 10/11 is a decent price for the Scot to score.
My bet: Gary Twigg anytime goalscorer (10/11)
[There’s also; Gary Twigg to score first (7/2)]
Shelbourne v Derry City
Once again I find myself talking about a striker, and once again a striker that’s continued his impervious form from last season. Philly Hughes may be on the butt end of every fat joke in the League of Ireland, but Phil’s hunger for goals was the main driving force behind Shels’ promotion last season, and he’s already scored two in two. Hughes has a terrific record in Tolka Park and I’d fancy him to add to that, and given the price he is to score first, a cheeky punt might be worth your while!
My bet: Phil Hughes first goalscorer (5/1)
Athlone Town v Finn Harps
To the First Division now, and this game brings together two sides that have tasted success and defeat in their two games this season.
Athlone squeezed past SD Galway in their first game but came unstuck in the ‘El Classico’ at Flancare Park. While Finn Harps fell just short of the mark away to Limerick, but came away winners at home to Mervue in a seven goal thriller. This one is priced nicely to finish in a deadlock and though I’d be veering toward a Finn Harps win I think Athlone may have enough to keep them at bay
My Bet: Draw (11/5)
Wexford Youths v Longford Town
There must be something the bookies know that I don’t, because Wexford are 5/2 to win this game at home! Granted, Longford are the only team in the division to come away with maximum points from their first two games, but Wexford put six goals past a Waterford side that beat Limerick away last week in their first home game. I’d be quite confident that Wexford will produce the goods again this weekend (although by not as much!) . This also acts as my bet for the week.
My Bet (for the week!): Wexford (5/2)
